# Find prospects, end to end

> Seed company, list, deep brief, and what to change when a search comes back thin.

Start from one company you already sell to. Mallin finds companies that look like them, tells you why each one is worth a call, and keeps watching the ones you care about.

## First, say what you sell

One or two sentences, in setup. Everything else ranks against it, so this is the highest leverage text in the product.

- "Payroll software" ranks badly.
- "Payroll and benefits for restaurant groups with 50 to 500 hourly staff" ranks well.

If a search comes back thin, this is the first thing to change.

## The run

1. **Give it a seed.** A customer you already have. Mallin reads that company, works out what makes them a fit, and looks for others like them. Use the website address if the name is common, because two companies share most names.
2. **Read the list.** Each row is a company with the reason it is there. Keep the ones worth working and dismiss the rest. Dismissing is remembered, so the same company does not come back next month.
3. **Go deep on the few that matter.** A deep brief researches one company properly: who to call, what is changing there, what to open with. It takes a few minutes and is counted separately from the search.
4. **Keep the list, or watch it.** Lists are saved and they grow. Track a company and Mallin checks on it, then tells you in **Monitoring** when something moves.

## When a search comes back thin or empty

**The seed was ambiguous.** Mallin researched a different company with the same name, flawlessly. Give the website address instead.

**What you sell is too vague.** The search has nothing to rank against. Add the industry, the size and the problem you solve.

**The filters are too narrow.** One state plus one industry plus a headcount band can leave almost nothing. Loosen the one you care least about.

A search that returns nothing still used a search. Tell us when that happens, because it should not. What each run costs you is on [What uses your allowance](/help/allowance).
